| VNR | Video News Release. |
| B-roll | The video portion of a television story, excluding soundbites. |
| Bites | The edited portion of an interview. |
| SOT | Sound On Tape, usually meaning a bite. |
| Nat Sound | Natural Sound, the noise that pills make as they go into a bottle or the sound of a engine starting. |
| SMT | Satellite Media Tour. The spokesperson sits in a studio or another venue with connectivity and does back-to-back interviews with TV stations around the country. |
| Satellite Feed | Video is put up on a satellite so that anyone with the proper coordinates can downlink it. |
| Coords | Coordinates. This is basically the address of the satellite feed including the time of transmission. |
| Fiber | Fiber optic cable, often used in urban areas for the transmission of a broadcast signal. |
| Vivyx | A popular brand name of fiber. |
| IFB | Interruptible Full Back. This is the earpiece worn by an anchor, reporter or interview subject, through which they hear their questions or instructions. Additionally, the "interruptible" portion means that a producer in a control room or satellite truck can override the signal to speak directly to the anchor, reporter or interview subject. |
| Encoding | Data invisible to the viewer which is embedded on a tape or broadcast signal which allows easier tracking of airings. Encoding is not, however, foolproof. Encoding can be stripped either intentionally or unintentionally. Additionally, encoding usually degrades the broadcast image because the tape has to go down several generations to be encoded. Think, making copies of a copy or faxing a fax. |
| Hard copy | Normally, this is a beta or DVC pro tape which is shipped directly to a newsroom. |
| Lav | Short for lavaliere, the small microphone, now usually wireless, that is attached to the interview subject. |
| Betcam SP | This is still the mainstay of field acquisition and distribution. In other words, it's the tape that most television stations still use as opposed to ¾" which is a very old format.
